Cape Point Vineyards

As the only Vineyard to be found in the Cape Peninsula, Here on the slopes of Chapmans Peak - a mere 2 km from the ocean - one finds a unique terroir where the combination of ancient mountain soils and cool sea breezes create ideal conditions for Sauvignon Blanc of distinction.

Lying on the slopes of the world-famous Chapman’s Peak, and abutting the Table Mountain National Park in Noordhoek, Cape Point Vineyards is set high in a backdrop of fauna and flora with breathtaking vistas of mountains and ocean at every turn. This narrow peninsula was initially discovered in the 15th century by the Portuguese seafarer, Bartholomew Diaz. In 1752 at least 30 000 vines were registered for excise purposes on the existing Cape Point Vineyards farm. Replanted in 1997 by owner Sybrand Van Der Spuy, Cape Point Vineyards has enjoyed award- winning status ever since its maiden vintage.

Noordhoek is situated in the Southern Peninsula of Cape Town at the foot of the world-famous Chap-man’s Peak. Noordhoek is surrounded by natural beauty with the Silvermine mountain range and the white sandy beaches of the Atlantic Ocean as the area borders. The country feel of Noordhoek is apparent upon arrival with the wide variety of birdlife and other indigenous wildlife that also call this beautiful area home.

"Our legacy began among these picturesque hills and valleys, where the harmony of nature inspired our vineyard. Today, with a state-of-the-art winery and a dedicated team, we craft distinctive wines that echo the essence of the land."

Joubert-Tradauw

Sixty-one years ago, Schalk-Willem Joubert left Wellington for the fertile Tradouw Valley to farm mainly with fruit and wine grapes. His son, Jacobus Joubert, realised the potential of growing premium grape cultivars for the production of wine. They delivered Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon to the Co-operative Cellar in Barrydale. Cabernet Franc was planted on the farm in 1982.

In the late 1990’s, Jacobus Joubert's son, Meyer Joubert, had a dream that was born whilst working as a child on the farm and making wine and working in the Napa Valley; they also worked in wine-tourism, which became a reality when an old building on the farm was restored and converted into an ageing maturation cellar. The fermentation cellar was built in 1998 out of stone from the rocky soils, characteristic of the farm. In 1999, the first grapes were harvested and crushed for the production of wine. The R62 Merlot/Cabernet Blend (60:40) was released after a 14-month ageing period in Burgundy oak barrels. The production is currently just below 3000 cases per year.

Meyer Joubert, an award-winning winemaker, studied viticulture at Elsenburg near Stellenbosch in the Western Cape and thereafter in California’s famous Napa Valley for two seasons, before returning to South Africa to make his own wine.

Meyer Joubert was the first wine-maker to identify the popularity of the world-famous R62 and liked the idea of Route 66 when they were in the US – consequently trademarked ‘R62’ as a wine. He produces the only R62 wine on this popular route.

Nuiba

Suzanne Coetzee is Nuiba's Winemaker. Having worked as a winemaker and in the industry for more than 15 years as well as travelling extensively abroad, she is passionate about creating wines with a sense of place. Her motto in winemaking is to preserve and enhance what is already there in the grapes.

"Nuiba is not just a word; it’s also not just a wine... Nuiba is a place. It is a farm in Namibia where I grew up and where I found who I am; it symbolizes the real me. It’s where I learned what it is to be thankful for rain, how to wake up early and go to the sheep paddock to let them out for the day; where I learned how to bake bread in a coal stove and that the stars are much brighter when there is no electricity – that you need to be careful of scorpions at night when walking barefoot and that one can hunt but that you also have to preserve the wildlife on your farm; it’s where I learned to be creative and to plan the week’s meals wisely because supplies are only fresh once a week. It’s is where the silence can be so overpowering; and where you learn to spend evenings together around a fire instead of a TV, where time sometimes stands still and one can breathe.. it is a place where my heart escapes to in my dreams…

My winemaking philosophy is to retain the primary grape flavours and to interfere as little as possible during the winemaking process.  I ferment in open fermenters and do as many punchdowns as we can, afterwich the wines are sent to older barrels for malolactic fermentation and ageing."
